What to wear for your portraits!

To answer your questions, here is the guide:

Clothing in a portrait can be a distraction away from the person being photographed.  You want to look good not necessarily the clothes you are wearing.   For you to shine through choose clothing carefully.

Light clothing can add weight to the body whereas dark clothing tends to slenderize.  Black is always a good color when the background being used is dark or black.  Long sleeves and yes even a turtleneck looks great.  Your face will be the center of attention.

Patterns even small zigzags can pick up the light incorrectly and cause problems so consider solid colors.  If the background is white, then white or a light solid color works well.  Bring two sets of clothing if possible.

For portraits avoid short sleeves and short pants or skirts.  Too much flesh can ruin your formal portrait.  Avoid fad clothing.  Portraits are often handed down through the family and are around for years.

White blouses or shirts under a dark jacket work very well.  A beautiful scarf of a different color may frame the face.    Decide whether your first outfit will be browns, navy/blues or black/grays.  The former is a warm color, the rest are cool colors.  If this is to be a family or group portrait, dress so that the colors blend together and not compete for an even flow.

Necklines

As mentioned, turtlenecks or V necks are the most attractive on almost everyone.  Open necklines tend to make the neck look wider.  High necklines ten to slim and frame the face.

If you are wearing a dress and your legs show, consider dark nylon stockings if your outfit is dark.  Shoes, stockings, socks should all blend in.   When you choose your two outfits, choose each set carefully

Do not wear clothing that is too tight or too baggy.

If you are wearing navy and white, your skirt or pants should be navy and the top lighter to pull your eyes upward.

Wedding and Beach Portraits

Wear light colored clothing.  The background will be mainly sand so it will blend in beautifully.

Khaki pants and white tops or navy/blue and white look great  especially when the family or group are similarly outfitted.  On the beach, bare feet is fine.  Often for beach weddings, guests and family dress in two or three colors.  It is easier and often more fun and the photos turn out fantastic.  Give them all a copy of this instruction.

Keep your hair style simple and off the face if possible so that shadows will not form on your facial features.    Do not wear sparkling eye shadow.  Blend your makeup well especially with any blush you may use.   Too much color may also make you look like you have raccoon eyes so take extra time to blend so that your eyes not your eye makeup stands out

If you wear eyeglasses, non reflective lens (or even frames without the glass) look best.

For wedding photography, consider that your dress is white when choosing a bouquet.  If you want your bouquet to stand out, choose brighter colors than your dress.
